  4.     Throughout the trial of former National Security Council
  5. aide Oliver North, the jury was the focus as often as the
  6. defendant. The jurors, all working-class blacks, became the
  7. butt of jokes because of their acknowledged ignorance about the
  8. Iran-contra affair. Last week one jury member was back in the
  9. news, seven weeks after voting to convict North of obstructing
  10. Congress, unlawfully destroying Government documents and
  11. accepting an illegal gift. A defense allegation of misconduct by
  12. a juror persuaded U.S. District Court Judge Gerhard Gesell to
  13. postpone North's sentencing until July 5.

  15.     Juror Tara Leigh King, 34, a photocopier operator, admitted
  16. having used marijuana and crack but said she stopped four months
  17. before the trial began. The defense argues that the possibility
  18. that she might have been under the influence of narcotics during
  19. the trial called into question the fairness of the proceedings.
  20. North's lawyers also claimed that King failed to disclose during
  21. jury selection that members of her family had arrest records,
  22. including an armed-robbery conviction of a brother. Gesell will
  23. hold a hearing this week, but the defense tactics are likely to
  24. win North only a short respite before he receives his sentence.
